Allen joined the Royal Air Force in 1967 where he subsequently worked as a Plotter Air Photo then Photographic Interpreter, serving also in Cyprus and Malta. On leaving the service, he owned and lived upon a 36 ft traditional motor cruiser which he sailed through the inland waterways to arrive at Cambridge. He subsequently worked a further 16 years with a public utility as a cartographic draughtsman including doing site surveys...."
